A Snack Star is Born: Cranberries with Less Sugar

Cranberries are hugely popular and versatile. By introducing a reduced-sugar sweetened dried version, Ocean Spray and Bösch Boden Spies open up completely new possibilities for food producers.

Cranberries even have the potential to replace time-honored classics: in a taste test conducted by the market research institute IFAK, cranberries left raisins in the dust. 55% of the testers said milk buns with cranberries tasted better and 74% would pay a premium price for them. Acidity, sweetness, fruitiness, color, consistency, aroma – sweetened dried cranberries were clearly ahead in nearly all of the key evaluation criteria.

Healthy, tasty, low-sugar snacks

At Bösch Boden Spies, we offer reduced-sugar cranberries from Ocean Spray. Unlike other suppliers, our partner Ocean Spray replaces most of the sugar with corn fiber instead of sucralose. The results are impressive:

  • 50% less sugar,
  • 36% fewer calories,
  • 200% more fiber.

In this form, cranberries visibly and tangibly upgrade the color, taste and function of a wide range of snacks. The reduced-sugar berries are extremely interesting for health-conscious consumers and an ideal ingredient for cereals, baked goods and dark chocolate. Combined with nuts, it also works well as a nutritious snack between meals. Today, dried cranberries are a classic in convenience salads in the U.S. – and in Europe, too, more and more consumers are developing an appetite for salads featuring the tasty red berries.
