Overall, the EU harvest is estimated at just under 10 million tons almost identical to the previous year and approximately 7.5 % below the average of the last 3 years.
A larger harvest is expected in Germany, with growth also on the horizon in Poland, the Czech Republic and Austria. In contrast, Italy, Spain and Hungary are expecting volumes to decline.
Poland, the EU's largest producer, is expecting a slight increase compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, the Harvest expected to be 15 % below the three-year average are still to come. In addition, last year’s crop was quite weak, so we are still looking at a harvest that falls below expectations.
We source our apples from three main growing regions. Here is an overview of the current situation:
(1) Mazowieckie region (Grojec area, south of Warsaw):
This is the largest apple-growing area in Poland. Fortunately, it was the least affected by frost. The harvest here is estimated to be 3-5 % higher compared to other regions.
(2) Lubelskie & Świętokrzyskie regions (south-eastern Poland):
This is the second largest growing area in the country. Unfortunately, the orchards here suffered more severe frost damage than in the previous year. The harvest is estimated to be 3-4 % lower than in the previous year and is noticeably weaker than in the Grojec region.
(3) Wielkopolskie region:
This region is close to our production site, but is not a major growing area. However, it was not severely affected by frost, so a solid average harvest can be expected here.
The regional situation varies greatly, with considerable variations between the growing regions. Even within the same region, conditions can vary greatly. Some orchards were unaffected by the frosts in May and unfavorable weather conditions, while others in the immediate vicinity suffered considerable damage.
Due to current crop expectations in Europe and an average crop in China, we expect prices for low moisture apple to remain relatively stable compared to last year.
However, the price for apples used for drying is influenced by both the apple juice concentrate price and the fresh/retail market price and typically sits somewhere between the two. If the apple crop comes in lower than expected, prices will firm and probably also increase after harvest is completed and prices for fresh apple and concentrate determined.
China: approx. 38 million tons (-5 % compared to the previous year). Market uncertainties exist due to US tariffs, among other things.
USA: round 5 million tons (+2.6 %).
Turkey: approx. 2.7 million tons (-38.7 %), significant decline due to frost damage.
Moldova: -26.7 % Decline expected.
Ukraine: -7.6 % Decline expected.
For the coming season, a largely constant production of around 0.6 million tons expected. However, in some regions, such as Italy and France, the declines in area to be expected.
The Top producers remain Germany, Italy and France. Thanks to the good harvest in Germany is expected to be sufficient Association goods be available.
